Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, has called for collective support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stating that unity and collaboration are important to ensure Nigeria’s success.
News About Nigeria gathered that this appeal was made during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions, led by its Chairman, Chinedu Ogah, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Governor Fubara expressed his gratitude to the committee for their visit and highlighted the need for cooperative efforts to address national challenges.
“Let me thank you, especially for coming to see us. On behalf of the Government and the good people of Rivers State, I assure you that you have not made any mistake. You have done the right thing and taken the right step. I believe that by the end of your visit, you will come up with recommendations that will help us solve some of these problems,” he said.
Fubara said it is necessary to support President Tinubu’s administration to maintain the unity and progress of Nigeria.
“We all have to put hands together to support this administration of our President. Nigeria is a very big and complex society; different ideologies, multi-cultural beliefs, social differences, but we are all here as one because of the flag of Nigeria. If Nigeria succeeds, we all succeed. And Nigeria will only succeed when we support the President,” he stated.
In addition, Governor Fubara addressed the issue of prison congestion and called for investigations and trials to alleviate the overcrowding in correctional facilities.
“Most of these issues that we are talking about; overcrowding of the Correctional Centres, might be due to delay in the trial of their cases. We need to make sure that our institutions are functioning effectively. If they are functioning effectively, I strongly believe that most of these issues of overcrowding of the Correctional Centres won’t be there,” he noted.
During the meeting, Chinedu Ogah pointed out the neglect faced by the Correctional Service, particularly in security and reintegration efforts for inmates.
He noted that 91 percent of inmates in Rivers State were awaiting trial and stressed the need for reforms to ensure their proper reintegration into society.
Ogah praised Governor Fubara for his efforts in reducing crime rates through youth empowerment programmes and urged continued collaboration between the state and federal governments to improve the correctional service system.
