The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos State has heightened security measures at its entrance.
News About Nigeria reports that this move comes in response to a planned protest aimed at the commission.
According to The Nation, the EFCC has deployed a joint security force to secure all routes leading to its office.
This office is located on Awolowo Road in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
The security team comprises operatives from the Lagos State Anti-Crime Outfit, also known as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
Additionally, personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) are also part of the joint security effort.
The increased security presence is aimed at preventing any potential breaches or disruptions to the EFCC’s operations.
The commission said it remains vigilant in the face of the planned protest.
The EFCC said by bolstering security at its entrance demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety of its personnel, assets, and the general public.
This proactive measure helps maintain a secure environment for the commission to carry out its duties effectively.
On Thursday, the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said intelligence at the disposal of some civil society organisations showed that a former governor and two former ministers are behind the protests being organised against the EFCC.
Also, concerned Nigerian youths wrote a letter dated July 4, 2024, addressed to the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
The protest is due to take place with the hashtag #ReformEFCC on X.com.
In that letter, as seen, the demands include, “Respect our fundamental human rights, stop indiscriminate arrest and invasion of people’s homes/businesses in the middle of the night like armed robbers, stop the stereotyping and profiling of young innocent Nigerian youths, Be more professional and civil in your operations,” among others.
The protest will take place in some other states across the country—Edo, Enugu, Kwara, Oyo, Gombe, and the Federal Capital Territory, among others.
