UK-Based Nigerian Diverts Wedding Gift to Aid Sickle Cell Patient After Friend’s Ungrateful Response

In an unexpected turn of events, a generous gesture from UK-based Nigerian, Olamide Obe, led to a touching act of kindness for a sickle cell patient in Nigeria, following an ungrateful response from his friend.

Olamide Obe, who shares his thoughts and experiences on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @olajideobe, recounted an interaction with a close friend in Nigeria who is set to get married soon.

Obe had planned to send ₦50,000 as a wedding gift since he couldn’t attend the wedding in person. However, his friend’s reaction took him by surprise.

“The audacity keeps getting worse,” Obe tweeted.

“A certain friend is getting married soon. So I asked him to give me his bank details so I can send him ₦50,000 to get a wedding gift since I will unfortunately not be able to attend his wedding. While we were still talking, baba said so na £25 you go give me for wedding gift. I was confused and perplexed at the same time. He has already converted the 50k to GBP and felt he deserves more than the pound equivalent. I don’t have energy for back and forth, I just told him make he no vex. I’m surely not sending him any dime again, I’ll put my 50k to a more noble cause.”

Obe’s decision to withhold the gift sparked a broader discussion about entitlement and gratitude, with many users supporting his stance that generosity should be appreciated, not demanded.

In a heartwarming twist, another X user, CHRISTOPHER UDOKA (@ChrisSnr25), reached out to Obe with a plea for help for a friend suffering from sickle cell disease.

Udoka’s message read, “Sir, this would go a really long way towards helping my friend. I cannot post the full video because it exceeds the max timing allowed for unverified accounts. Hope you see this. God bless you❤”.

Moved by the sincerity of the request and the plight of the sickle cell patient, Obe decided to redirect his intended gift to this more urgent and noble cause.

He later shared a screenshot of the transfer receipt on X, confirming that he had sent the ₦50,000 to help the sickle cell patient.
