Senate Adjourns Plenary Till July 2

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, June 11, adjourned the plenary session to July 2, 2024.

News About Nigeria reports that the 10th National Assembly will be one year in office on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

The recess is to enable the lawmakers to participate in the activities marking 2024 Democracy Day as well as its end-of-session break.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the Federal Government declared Wednesday, June 12, a public holiday to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day celebration.

In June 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria’s democracy.

The decision was to posthumously honour MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Before the new date, Democracy Day was celebrated annually on May 29.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the 2024 Democracy occasion, stating that the country has come a long way since its first democracy celebration in 1960.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the efforts of the founding fathers of democracy in the country and also remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance.

On May 14, the Senate adjourned plenary in honour of the late House of Representatives member, Rep. Isa Dogonyaro, who died on May 10 in Abuja.

Dogonyaro represented the Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa in the House of Representatives before his death.

The Senate resolution followed the adoption of a motion for adjournment moved by the deputy leader of the Senate, Lola Ashiru (APC-Kwara), and seconded by Minority Leader Abba Morro (PDP-Benue).
