The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has stated that he will adhere to the directives of the Federal Government concerning the establishment of state police in the country, News About Nigeria reports.
He disclosed this on Monday in Lagos State, through the Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South-West, Mr. Abiodun Alabi, who was on a working visit to the state.
He noted that the Force will not go against the government but will abide by whatever decision the Federal Government will take on the issue of state police, adding that it has become imperative that the Force explain its stand in view of the many opinions and views the matter has generated.
“The Nigerian Police Force will abide by whatever decision the Federal Government will take on the issue of state police.
“The Force decided to explain its stand in view of the many opinions and views the matter had generated,” he stated.
Egbetokun therefore urged officers and operatives of the Police Force to continue in their jobs as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution, enjoining them to be disciplined and hard-working, to respect human rights, and to carry out their duties in the best professional ways.
He also warned them against the misuse of firearms, stressing that they should be used responsibly in strict accordance with the law.
Speaking on other issues peculiar to men of the force, including mental and physical health, the IGP noted that the officer in charge of police medical has been given orders to carry out mental and psychological tests on personnel for better performance.
