There has been a fresh twist to the emirship tussle in Kano State as a Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered the eviction of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the reinstated Emir of Kano, from Gidan Rumfa Palace.
News About Nigeria reports that the development follows the decision of a state high court presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu granting an order restraining the eviction of Emir Sanusi II.
The court also directed the police to ensure that Aminu Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, who was deposed last week, receives all his due rights and privileges.
Justice S. A. Amobeda, the presiding judge, granted the ex parte order on Tuesday, stating that it was made in the interest of justice and peace in Kano.
The order restrains the respondents, including the state government and security agents, from infringing on Bayero’s rights in any way.
It also orders the eviction of anyone residing in the palace illegally.
The order reads in part, “An order restraining the 3th, 4th and 5th Respondents and all other Respondents from denying the applicant to use his official residence and palace at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu as well as enjoyment of all rights and privileges accrued to him by virtue of being Emir of Kano State, and to evicting anything, anybody residing within the palace illegally pending the hearing and the determination of the originating summons.”
This latest development comes on the heels of the Kano House of Assembly’s repeal of the Kano Emirates Council law, which was used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to dethrone Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The repealed law led to a standoff between the state government and the deposed Emir, with Governor Yusuf ordering the affected Emirs to vacate their palaces within 48 hours.
While four Emirs complied, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero returned to Kano and moved into the palace at Nassarawa with heavy military protection, leading to his arrest being ordered by the governor.
However, the police stated they would comply with the court order reinstating Sanusi.
