A mosque in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin, Lagos, collapsed on Sunday afternoon.
News About Nigeria reports that the incident has resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, with many worshippers feared dead and others trapped in the rubble.
The incident occurred during the Zuhr prayer time, and eyewitnesses reported seeing bodies being recovered from the collapsed building.
The exact number of casualties is currently unknown, as no official statement has been issued by relevant authorities.
This latest incident is part of a disturbing trend in Lagos State, where building collapses have become all too common.
In 2022 alone, 61 buildings collapsed across Nigerian states, with Lagos State topping the list with 20 incidents, according to the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) report.
Just last week, a two-story building in Aguda partially collapsed during a downpour. Reports have it that the incident caused panic among residents.
Fortunately, a prompt response from emergency services ensured no loss of life or injury in that incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly to the distress call, arriving at the scene by 10:57 am. Director Margaret Adeseye stated that the situation was controlled without any loss of life or injury, thanks to the prompt response from other agencies.
She said, “The coordinated operation included multiple agencies, the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, the Lagos State Safety Commission, LASEMA, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force from Aguda Division, the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, and a team of health officials from Coker Aguda LCDA.
“The swift and efficient response of all involved agencies ensured that the situation was controlled without any loss of life or injury. The affected building has been secured, and measures are being implemented to prevent further risk to the public.”
