The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and arraigned a masquerade which is popularly known as Oriokpa for beating a female nurse at Ugwuoye Junction in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state, News About Nigeria reports.

The masquerade’s arrest was disclosed in a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Thursday in Enugu.

According to the statement, the masquerade was arrested by police operatives serving in the Nsukka Sector of the Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad while he was assaulting the nurse.

He further revealed that upon interrogation, the masquerader was identified as Ugwuoke Ebube.

Ebube according to Ndukwe is a 22 years old man who is a resident of Enugu-Nsukka Road.

He further revealed that the suspect was arraigned before the Nsukka Magistrate court but was granted bail by the court.

Ndukwe further noted that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, condemns such an act and has vowed that henceforth, the command will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found wanting.

He said, “He was arraigned at the Nsukka Magistrate Court of Enugu State, Nigeria, on the 22 of May 2024 but was granted bail by the court. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, has condemned the act of assault.

“The commissioner warned those intending to hide under the guise of cultural celebration to commit such a criminal act of assault against fellow citizens to desist forthwith. He stressed that the Command will henceforth not hesitate to bring anyone found wanting to book, just as in the case at hand.”
