Murder Charge: Court Discharges 12 Students, Cites Lack Of Evidence

An activist known as ‘Lord of Warri’ has disclosed that the student killed by fellow students at Ajayi Crowther University was Prince Alex Timileyi of Warri Kingdom.

Prince Alex Timileyi, identified as the son of Princess Antonia Emiko, daughter of Olu Erejuwa II (1951–1986) and first cousin of His Majesty, Ogíamè Atuwatsé III CFR, the current Olu of Warri Kingdom, was reportedly tortured to death by fellow students.

Ajayi Crowther University management, in a statement by its spokesperson, Femi Atoyebi, announced that the students involved in the assault had been expelled and handed over to the police for prosecution.

The university said it has zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour and clarified that the expelled students were not part of any cult group.

The activist, in an open letter addressed to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and posted on his X page, has called for justice for the murdered prince.

In the letter titled, ‘Regarding the Tragic Murder of Prince Alex Timileyi of the Warri Kingdom at Crowther University, Oyo State,’ the activist expressed deep sadness and concern over the safety and security of students in Nigerian schools.

He urged Governor Makinde to ensure that those responsible for the heinous crime are brought to justice.

“This incident has left us deeply saddened and concerned about the safety and security of students in schools not just in Oyo State but in Nigeria as a whole,” the activist stated.

He condemned the act of taking the law into one’s hands without proper investigation, noting that the deceased was alleged to have stolen a phone and was subsequently tortured for six hours, leading to his death.

“No one should be punished without a fair trial and due process,” the letter continued. “The young prince was neither on trial nor was he arrested. Instead, he was beaten to death. He was also the only son of his mother, making this loss even more devastating.”

The activist added that the perpetrators should be held accountable according to the laws of Nigeria, which presume innocence until proven guilty.

He called on the Oyo State government and security agents to ensure that justice is served.
