Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, accusing him of creating tension in the state, News About Nigeria reports.
This comes after the former Emir was seen arriving at the Aminu Kano International Airport in the early hours of Saturday, May 25, 2024, amidst a crowd of supporters.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the former Emir was “smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the Governor.”
The statement alleged that the former Emir’s actions aimed to disturb public peace and attempt to destroy the relative peace enjoyed by the state.
Tofa said the Governor, who is also the Chief Security Officer of the state, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect.
This development comes after the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the palace in the company of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, and other top government functionaries at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Ado Bayero arrived in Kano this morning.
The former Emir’s arrival at the airport was met with a warm reception from his supporters, who chanted verses from the Holy Quran and hailed his return. However, the former Emir did not respond to the crowd, instead.
His supporters were heard chanting, “You (alone) we worship, and you (alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).” Others were heard saying, “God the Almighty will kill your enemies.”
The whereabouts of the monarch had been unknown since his deposition by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Thursday.
