The Department of State Service (DSS) has reacted to media reports alleging that its operatives invaded the Emir of Kano’s Palace.
News About Nigeria reports that the state secret service has described the claim as “untrue”.
Speaking to newsmen in Kano on Thursday, the State Director of DSS, Mr. Muhammad Alhassan, explained that the agency only deployed its personnel to the palace as part of a security arrangement for the visit of the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, to the Emir.
However, according to him, the personnel were withdrawn following the postponement of the visit due to the Emir’s absence from town.
Alhassan said there was no truth whatsoever in the report alleging that DSS operatives stormed the Emir’s Palace in connection with the recent developments at the State House of Assembly.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the “false and malicious” report, which he said was aimed at causing unnecessary tension and misinformation.
The denial comes on the heels of the Kano State House of Assembly’s repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law, 2019, which dissolved the Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.
According to the new law, “The governor shall take all necessary measures to restore the status of the Kano Emirate System to its positions prior to the enactment of the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019.”
The new law, passed on Thursday, technically dethrones Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and recognizes former Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, as the Emir of Kano.
Sanusi’s portrait has since been displayed on the giant wall of the Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano, while that of Aminu Bayero was removed, signaling Sanusi’s imminent return to the palace.
