Isaac Kamalu: Rivers State Commissioner Resigns, Rejects Fubara's Redeployment

Rivers State Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, has resigned from the State Executive Council.

His resignation comes after Governor Siminalayi Fubara reassigned him to the Ministry of Employment, Generation, and Economic Empowerment on Tuesday, News About Nigeria reports.

Kamalu, a loyalist of former Governor Nyesom Wike, had served as Finance Commissioner under Wike and retained the position in Fubara’s cabinet.

In his resignation letter to the governor, Kamalu expressed difficulty in delivering good governance amidst “doubt and bitterness.”

He stated that despite his best efforts in serving the state, the current circumstances made it challenging to continue.

Kamalu rejected his redeployment, citing an unhealthy work environment. He expressed hope for peace and thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve.

Kamalu’s resignation also disputed Governor Fubara’s claims of a N27 billion monthly increase in internally generated revenue.

Recall that Fubara announced on Friday a 100% increase in the state’s monthly internally generated revenue (IGR).

Governor Fubara disclosed his address to the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts.

He said the state’s monthly IGR rose from around N11 billion during the previous administration to between N26 and N27 billion within just one year of his tenure.

Earlier in the day, Adangor, another ally of Wike, resigned from Fubara’s government, citing interference with his duties as Attorney General. Adangor was redeployed from his position as Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor’s Office) on Tuesday night.

The Rivers State Government, as of press time, has not provided a reason for the redeployment of Adangor and Kamalu.
