Popular Instagram personality Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, has been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for unlawfully spraying and tampering with the Nigerian currency, the Naira, at a social event.
News About Nigeria reports that this act goes against the rules set in the Central Bank Act of 2007.
Cubana Chief Priest is set to appear in court on Wednesday, April 17th, before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The EFCC, through its prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), and seven other legal representatives, filed three charges against Cubana Chief Priest on April 4th.
The charges allege that he tampered with money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during social events.
In one charge, it’s claimed that on February 13th, 2024, at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Cubana Chief Priest sprayed N500 notes for two hours during a social event, violating the Central Bank Act.
Another charge alleges a similar incident in 2020 during a social event in Lagos, while the third charge accuses him of a similar offense in January 2024, also in Lagos.
This legal action follows the recent arraignment of another controversial figure, cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, on similar charges.
Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in jail for his actions on Friday.
The judge who sentenced her, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos said it was important to show others that messing with the naira is wrong.
Bobrisky admitted to misusing the naira but asked for mercy. He said he didn’t know it was against the law. However, the judge reminded him that not knowing the law doesn’t excuse breaking it.
