Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has provided reassurance to Nigerians, stating that the country will generate 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity within the next six months, News About Nigeria reports.

He made this announcement during an appearance on Channel Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

Adelabu stated that Nigeria currently generates and transmits over 4,000MW of electricity, with minor challenges experienced at the distribution stage.

He expressed confidence in addressing these issues and increasing power generation capacity.

The minister said the Bola Tinubu administration is ready to tackle the challenges facing the power sector.

He disclosed that the government has engaged experts and stakeholders to identify the sector’s problems and devise solutions.

Adelabu revealed that Nigeria has an installed capacity of 13,000MW across hydropower and thermal plants but has faced constraints preventing the generation of more than 4,000MW.

He pledged to change this narrative and ensure an increase in power generation under the current administration.

He said, “In the next six months, Nigerians should expect no less than 66,000 MWof power generated.”

Adelabu assured that this increased power generation would be successfully transmitted and distributed to Nigerians across the country.

Acknowledging the challenges in the power sector, the minister urged Nigerians to exercise patience as efforts are made to address them.

The assurance from the Minister of Power comes at a time when Nigeria has experienced a drop in power generation since January 2024, attributed to low gas supply.

Additionally, the national grid collapsed twice in the first quarter of the year, worsening the challenges faced by the power sector.

In response to complaints about the increase in tariffs for Band A customers, Adelabu promised that Nigerians would enjoy a stable power supply within the next six months.
