Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has strongly condemned the brutalisation of two officials of the State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA) by officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Ibadan, the state capital, News About Nigeria reports.
During his visits to the homes of the assaulted officials, Nurudeen Abiola and Taiwo Adeagbo, as well as the state command of the NIS, Governor Makinde expressed outrage at the inhumane treatment inflicted on the OYRTMA officials for carrying out their duties of enforcing traffic rules.
The incident occurred when OYRTMA officials arrested an immigration officer for violating traffic regulations.
Makinde assured the victims that the government would take decisive action to ensure that the perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions.
He emphasised the need for accountability and stressed that no one, regardless of their agency affiliation, is above the law.
He said, “Whether you are an immigration official or you work for other paramilitary agencies, these individuals are just trying to enforce the laws of the state. The fact that you work for a federal agency does not mean you are superior.”
The governor instructed the Attorney-General to initiate necessary legal proceedings against the culprits and vowed to pursue the matter with the immigration authorities.
Speaking at the office of the NIS in Agodi Gate, Ibadan, Governor Makinde called for improved cooperation among security agencies in the state to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He stressed the importance of maintaining the rule of law and reiterated the state’s commitment to upholding traffic regulations.
Makinde urged the NIS to collaborate with the government to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
