President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, for Dakar, Senegal, to attend the inauguration of Senegal’s President-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The President’s trip follows an invitation from the Republic of Senegal and as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. He will be among other regional leaders witnessing the inauguration at the Diamniadio Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.
Accompanying him on the trip will be the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and other senior government officials.
“The President is expected to return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the inauguration,” a statement by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale stated.
This travel marks Tinubu’s first since his two-day visit to Qatar in March at the invitation of Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during which he signed several agreements with Qatari authorities spanning education to sports.
Previously, in February, President Tinubu attended the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa.
During this three-day stay, he addressed thematic issues such as climate change and discussed the AU’s participation and priorities in the G20.
Senegal will be the fifth African state visited by President Tinubu since assuming office 10 months ago, and it will mark his 17th foreign destination overall.
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has traveled extensively to various destinations including Paris, France (3x); London, the United Kingdom; Bissau, Guinea-Bissau (2x); Nairobi, Kenya; Porto Norvo, Benin Republic; New Delhi, India; Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; New York, the United States of America; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Berlin, Germany; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Doha, Qatar.
