The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday revealed that it didn’t monitor the just concluded national convention of the Labour party that produced Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

The election body disowned the Labour Party’s national convention which was held in Anambra in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi.

Oyekanmi, who in the statement said that the conduct of the convention was not monitored by INEC, did not explain why the INEC couldn’t monitor the national convention.

News About Nigeria reported that the LP shifted the national convention from Umuahia in Abia to Nnewi, Anambra State on Tuesday.

The LP National Legal Adviser, Mr Kehinde Edun, who spoke on the change of venue, had also claimed that the party had duly informed INEC about the change in venue and date.

Edun said, “No, it is holding in Anambra. Nnewi, to be precise, not Umuahia in Abia State again. In fact, Umuahia was not even the first venue we chose. Benin was the first choice before we changed to Umuahia and now Nnewi. So, we are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and the time.”

The LP had also announced Abure as the party National Chairman for a second term, regardless of INEC’s absence and the opposition of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

Speaking after his re-election, Abure declared the positions of deputy national chairmen of the party reserved for the NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, vacant.
