Poor Power Supply: FG Threatens To Revoke Discos Licenses

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to power distribution companies (Discos) regarding the persistently poor power supply across the country, News About Nigeria reports.

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, said that the government intends to revoke the licences of Discos for failing to meet performance standards.

The Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria have been summoned for a crucial meeting to address the current challenges.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, Minister Adelabu expressed concern over the inadequate distribution of electricity despite increased generation efforts by the generating companies.

He said that the ministry has been pressuring generation companies to improve performance, resulting in a recent increase in the generation to over 4000 MW.

However, certain distribution companies are reportedly failing to effectively distribute the power supplied by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Minister Adelabu said that he would hold all distribution companies accountable for their performance, stating that “willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.”

He acknowledged the impact of vandalism on power infrastructure, particularly in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

To address the challenges, the minister instructed TCN to prioritise repair work on damaged transmission towers and power lines.

Plans are also underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, aiming to alleviate financial strains and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide.

Adelabu urged electricity consumers to remain patient as the government works tirelessly to address issues and enhance service delivery.
