The Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Segun Agbaje, has described the late Herbert Wigwe as an asset who had what all of them at GTB lacked.
Eulogising Wigwe during a tribute by professionals and colleagues on Monday night in Lagos, Agbaje described the late businessman as a brother, a competitor, and a friend.
He also recalled how he and Wigwe were colleagues at GT Bank and how Wigwe distinguished himself from others with his drive and banking skills.
Agbaje further noted that one thing that was profound about the late Access Bank CEO was that he had the power to chase accounts, network, and deliver things that others could not deliver.
Recounting how he met Wigwe in November 1991, Agbaje said, “I met Herbert in November 1991. We were both in the corporate bank. This gentleman walked in, and didn’t take off his jacket because we all had our jackets on. Well, that was Herbert, he was going to do it his own way.
“He drove a red golf. Who drives a red golf? Only a man who’s that brazen drives around in a red golf. Very quickly, Herbert earned our respect. Herbert was one of the cleverest people in Guarantee Trust Bank. He was a credit analysts’ analyst. He had the power to chase accounts, network and deliver things that we all couldn’t.”
News About Nigeria reported that the Access Bank CEO and founder of Herbert Wigwe University died on February 9, 2024, in a helicopter crash with his wife, Chizoba Wigwe, his 29-year-old son, Chizi Wigwe and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.
Wigwe rose to the position of Access Bank Plc CEO after succeeding his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.
