The National Examination Council (NECO) announced on Monday that 67.35% of candidates who sat for the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) secured five credits, including mathematics and English language.

The Registrar of NECO, Professor Ibrahim Wushishi, made the revelation during the release of results at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

News About Nigeria gathered that out of the 74,950 candidates (39,213 males and 35,737 females) who participated in the exams held from November 20th to December 20th, 2023, 50,066 candidates achieved the benchmark of five credits, in both mathematics and English language.

Breaking down the subject-specific results, Wushishi stated that 75.59% of the 73,124 candidates who took the English language secured credits and above.

In Mathematics, 67,814 out of 73,119 candidates, representing 92.75%, achieved credit and above.

Additionally, 84.11% of candidates (62,530) obtained five credits, regardless of performance in Mathematics and English Language.

The registrar also addressed examination malpractice cases, stating that there has been a significant decline of 25.4% compared to the previous year.

A total of 8,518 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice, down from 11,419 in 2022.

Wushishi revealed that the disciplinary actions taken include the blacklisting of two supervisors from Oyo and Lagos states for poor supervision and aiding and abetting.

A centre in Borno State was also blacklisted for facilitating the sharing of WhatsApp messages among candidates.

In addition to announcing the results, Wushishi launched the Automated Annual Posting Calendar, a digital platform designed to streamline the posting of NECO staff for out-of-station assignments.

The registrar expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful conduct of the examination and the timely release of results.
