On Monday, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Edo State took to the streets of Benin City, the state capital, to express their grievances over the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
They carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘End Economic Hardship’ and ‘FG End the Hunger in Nigeria Now’.
This demonstration in Edo State follows a similar protest staged by residents of Ibadan against economic hardship.
Also, the ‘Take It Back Movement’, a human rights group, embarked on a protest in Lagos State to decry the escalating prices of food and the overall high cost of living in the country.
This demonstration occurred in defiance of a warning issued by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, on Sunday.
Despite the police warning, the protesters congregated at the Ojuelegba under-bridge area of Lagos State, holding placards with various inscriptions.
News About Nigeria reported that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, cautioned protesters against infringing on the rights of others during the planned nationwide strike scheduled by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for February 27 and February 28.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also declared its intention to stage a nationwide protest beginning tomorrow.
The NLC announced the protest on February 16, citing the government’s alleged failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The labour union had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government to address the widespread hardship, leading to the planned nationwide demonstration.
