Hardship: Lagos Govt Slashes Transport Fare

The Lagos State Government has revealed that it will be giving a percent slash in transport fares for government-owned transport schemes in the state, News About Nigeria reports.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this during a live media chat, ‘Sanwo Speaks’ on Thursday.

He noted that this is one of the measures his administration is taking to help the people of the state cope with the harsh economic realities.

Recall that the governor had also announced that civil servants would begin working three days a week, as opposed to the normal five working days in the country.

The governor further noted that additional support for transport fares will be given to workers in the teaching sector.

Sanwo-Olu, also in a bit to assist the residents of the state pull through the constant increase in prices of goods and commodities, also stated that he will begin to distribute palliatives.

“We are going to be opening ‘Sunday Markets’ in about 42 markets in Lagos. This time, you’ll be buying at a reduced cost. We’re going to cap what you can buy at not more than N25,000, and we’re going to be giving you a 25% rebate immediately there,” he said.

Citizens of the country have taken to the streets to protest the harsh conditions of the economy, lamenting the fact that the government floated the naira and, at the same time, removed subsidy without any plan for palliative.

They argue that there is no social intervention, no social empowerment, and the government just allows people to be exposed to poverty, hunger, and hopelessness.
