The Federal Government has stated that it will partner with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen security in the region, News About Nigeria reports.

The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, made this known in a statement issued by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Information, in Abuja on Saturday.

Badaru stated that the government will cooperate with other ECOWAS countries to ensure that security in the region is beefed up and top-notch.

Badaru, who stated this while speaking at the opening of the Extraordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, at the Ministerial Level in Abuja, maintained that it is important that there is collective action from the countries while addressing regional security challenges.

He reiterated the Nigerian government’s unwavering dedication to advancing the ECOWAS security agenda to set a commendable example for regional cooperation and solidarity.

“Nigeria remains committed to working hand in hand with our ECOWAS counterparts to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” he said.

The minister further echoed that Nigeria’s leadership role was important in promoting peace and security throughout West Africa.

The meeting, according to Badaru, was to deliberate on pressing security matters affecting the region and possible ways these security issues can be solved and peace promoted in the region.

Recall that three member states, namely, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, have been withdrawn from ECOWAS, and this development has generated concerns across the region and posed security threats also.
