The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final after defeating South Africa 4-2 on penalties.
The semi-final match ended 1-1 after extra time.
Both teams scored from penalty kicks during regular time, with William Troost-Ekong scoring for Nigeria in the 67th minute and Teboho Mokoena equalising for South Africa in the 90th minute.
Nigeria initially thought they scored a second goal by Victor Osimhen, but it was called back after a VAR review.
In the penalty shootout, Nigeria emerged victorious, setting up a final clash with either Ivory Coast or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, was the hero of the match, saving two penalties and earning the Man of the Match award.
The Super Eagles maintain a perfect record against South Africa in AFCON history.
The AFCON final will take place on Sunday, with Nigeria awaiting the winner of the Ivory Coast vs. Democratic Republic of Congo match.
Before the match, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali said that he was eager to face the South African team.
According to him, he is familiar with the style of South African players as he plays with the in the South African Premier League.
Speaking with newsmen, Nwabali said that he desired to ‘test his defence’ against them.
Nwabali acknowledged the strength of both Cape Verde and South Africa, describing them as formidable teams.
However, he specifically said that he preferred to play against South Africa because he was curious to see how his defensive skills would measure up against the opponent.
“I really wish to see how my defence will fare against them. Yes, most of their players know me, and I also know them,” Nwabali said.
