A mass communication student at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State, identified as Jemima Shetima-Balami, has allegedly ended her life after she got jilted by her boyfriend, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed by the PPRO of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Yahaya Suleiman, who confirmed the incident on Monday.
The state PRO stated that the father of the deceased had reported the incident to the command, while another source, who pleaded anonymity, informed the command about the deceased’s relationship with a lecturer, which went sour.
Before her demise, the 24-year-old student was a second-year National Diploma student on industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television, Yola.
Jemima, who was the only daughter of her father, hails from Garkida town in the Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State and reportedly passed away in her home at Vinikilang, close to ATV Yola, where she was observing her industrial attachment.
She was said to have drunk a substance suspected to be rat poison after the breakup with her boyfriend, who is reportedly a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University.
“Angered by the news from her boyfriend, the deceased took poison. We are investigating the matter, and justice will be served,” Suleiman said.
He further stated that investigations will be carried out to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the demise of the student.
Suleiman also advised the public against resorting to suicide, maintaining that suicide was a cowardly thing to do as it left no room for the resolution of issues.
He added that matters could be amicably resolved rather than going to extremes because it is an offence to commit suicide.
