On Saturday, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the Gubio local government area of Borno State, resulting in the deaths of six Quranic school pupils, commonly known as Almajiri.
News About Nigeria gathered that the explosion occurred when a metal scavenger unknowingly collected and stored various metallic items in a building near a Tsangaya school.
The incident took place at approximately 2 p.m., claiming the lives of innocent children and causing severe bodily harm.
The scavenger, unaware that an abandoned undetonated IED was among the collected metal items, unintentionally triggered the explosion.
A security source confirmed the deadly blast to Vanguard and shared images of the explosion’s aftermath.
In a related development, the Abuja police dispelled rumours of a bomb blast on Wednesday in the Maitama area of the nation’s capital.
There was a report of an explosion in the area, which created panic and confusion among residents.
According to a statement from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the explosion occurred near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, Abuja.
She said that preliminary findings indicate that an overheated metal refuse container activated under intense heat, resulting in the explosion.
Two refuse evacuators sustained injuries in the incident and are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.
The FCT Police Command urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from using metal refuse bins.
Instead, they recommended the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, as they pose a reduced risk of incidents related to overheated metal refuse containers.
