Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed his heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday night, News About Nigeria reports.
Describing the incident as ‘disheartening and unfortunate’, Governor Sanwo-Olu extended sympathies to the residents, particularly the victims, wishing them peace, comfort, and love during this sorrowful time.
In a condolence message issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu sympathised with his Oyo State counterpart, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and the Oyo State Government.
The explosion, reportedly caused by illegal miners storing explosive devices in a house in the Bodija area of Ibadan, resulted in two fatalities and 77 injuries.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Governor Makinde for the prompt deployment of first responders, relevant agencies, and resources for comprehensive search and rescue operations at the explosion site.
He expressed deep sadness over the incident and emphasised the need for vigilance and collaboration to prevent similar disasters in the future.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the Ibadan explosion that led to the destruction of many properties in the vicinity, with records of two fatalities and 77 people injured on Tuesday night at Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo State,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.
He added, “It is painful and worrisome that the explosion was caused allegedly by illegal miners who stored explosive devices in one of the houses in the Bodija area of the state. Sadly, the carelessness and unlawful activities of the illegal miners have brought sorrow to many families and the state.”
On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed sympathy to the immediate families of the victims, the government, and the people of Oyo State.
He assured Governor Makinde that the people of Lagos State would stand in solidarity during this difficult time.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that 77 people sustained injuries in the explosion, with two fatalities.
Injured victims were taken to public and private hospitals in Ibadan, and after receiving treatment, they were discharged.
Preliminary investigations revealed that illegal miners stored explosive devices, causing the blast.
Governor Makinde assured that medical personnel are on standby to provide necessary assistance to the injured, and visits have been made to the University College Hospital (UCH) to check on those affected.
The governor expressed sympathy for the victims and stressed the importance of vigilance and collaboration to prevent similar incidents in the future.
