Rivers Commissioner For Environment Joins Mmon, Resigns From Fubara's Cabinet

Following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the crisis in Rivers State, the State House of Assembly, in line with the peace agreement entered with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, is set to re-screen and re-confirm nine former commissioners who resigned from the state executive council.

According to a statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, on Monday in Port Harcourt, the commissioners would be re-screened and reconfirmed on Wednesday.

The clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly also explained that the commissioners are expected to produce 40 sets of their curriculum vitae (CV), photocopies, and copies of their credentials to the venue of the screening (State House of Assembly, Legislative Quarters).

News About Nigeria reported that their resignation greeted the administration of Governor Fubara on December 16, 2023, due to the then-crisis going on in the state between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Before the intervention of the President, Fubara had reportedly ordered the demolition of the state assembly complex to stop the move by Wike to impeach him and the then Speaker of the House, Edison Ehie, from office.

The Rivers State Governor also submitted the state’s 2024 Appropriation Bill to the four lawmakers loyal to him, who were led by the former Speaker, Ehie.

However, after President Tinubu’s intervention, he tasked the governor to re-submit the state’s 2024 budget to the fuller House of Assembly and also reinstate the commissioners who resigned.

The commissioners to be reconfirmed by the Assembly on Wednesday are said to be commissioners loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike, who bowed out of Fubara’s cabinet during the crisis.
