Osogbo Police In Trouble As Man Dies In Custody

The Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Osogbo, is in trouble as a 31-year-old businessman identified as Abdullahi Ismail Ayedade reportedly dies in its custody, News About Nigeria reports.

The family of the deceased has filed a petition against the department, alleging complicity in extortion and their son’s death.

The petition, which was submitted by legal representatives of the late Ayedade, led by Temi Salami (Esq), demands an investigation by the Inspector General of Police into the events that led to the businessman’s demise on December 31, 2023.

Salami stated that the circumstances that led to the arrest and detention of his client, the deceased, are dubious, adding that the police refused his client immediate medical care for his injuries, which, according to him, was a clear violation of his rights and indicative of a deeper problem within the force.

He disclosed that the deceased had been arrested for a suspected case of conspiracy and obtaining under false pretences and noted that he had been hit by a vehicle during the arrest.

He, however, noted that the police had held him at the Criminal Investigative Department instead of taking him to the hospital to be treated.

A family member who pleaded anonymity further stated that the health of the deceased had deteriorated while he was in custody, despite paying the sum of N3 million to the force.

Ayade died on New Year’s Eve, with white substances coming out of his mouth, suggestive of poisoning, according to the petition by the family’s counsel.

Salami therefore appealed to the Inspector General’s office to address Ayedade’s loss and stressed the need to hold those responsible accountable.
