Shehu Sani Says Nigeria’s Refusal To Join BRICS Retrogressive To Nation's Economic Future

Former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani said on Wednesday that the Federal Government’s failure to join BRICS, which is a group of major emerging economies that comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, would hinder the nation’s economic future.

Sani, in a post shared on his official X account, stated that the federal government is making a huge mistake by refusing to join BRICS because it is an alliance that can help the nation’s economy.

The former senator’s post reads, “Nigeria’s refusal or failure to join BRICS is retrogressive to our economic future. We can’t afford to lose out in an economic alliance that offers an alternative to the unjust and exploitative order that we belonged for decades. Our quest to continue to be the apprentice of Western economic system is leading us to nowhere. BRICS is where we should be now not later.”

News About Nigeria recalls that, in August 2023, when the economic bloc admitted six new members, which comprise Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, Vice President Kashim Shettima explained that Nigeria was not part of it because they never applied for BRICS membership.

According to the Vice President, their decision was based on the fact that President Bola Tinubu is “a true democrat who believes in consensus building.”

He further noted that there were so many variables that they needed to consider and evaluate with the Economic Advisory Council, the Federal Executive Council, and the National Assembly before they would decide whether to join BRICS or not.
