NIS Explains Reason Behind Recent Hike In International Passport Fees

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has confirmed that the automation process for passport applications in Nigeria is scheduled to commence operations on January 8, 2024, News About Nigeria reports.

The minister had previously announced in December that the Federal Government was nearing completion of a full automation system for passport applications.

The automated application system is designed to streamline the passport application process, allowing Nigerians to apply and complete the application online without the need for human contact.

The process includes uploading passport photos and supporting documents, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience for applicants.

During an inspection of the facilities of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja, Minister Tunji-Ojo, along with the Comptroller General of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju, confirmed that the automation initiative’s aim is to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum.

He said, “We are good to go live.  We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President.

“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum.”

The training process for the launch has already commenced, and the system is expected to enhance the security architecture of the country by helping to swiftly detect fake passport applications and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks.

He added that the initiative will improve the security architecture of the country, prompting a quick detection of fake passport applications and reducing bottlenecks.
