BREAKING: Gov Akeredolu Dies At 67

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has died at the age of 67, News About Nigeria reports.

The late governor succumbed to death after a long time of battling leukaemia, a cancer of the blood.

His death was disclosed by a reliable source, who stated that the governor had died in Lagos.

The source said that the State House medical team, which managed and looked after the late governor up until his last breath, had been looking for dialysis machines to be sent to his secret location in Lagos last week as he could no longer be flown abroad.

Akeredolu, who had been experiencing health issues, travelled abroad in June for medical treatment and remained there till September when he returned to Nigeria and resided in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, while trying to continue with his duty as Governor of Ondo State from Oyo.

This, however, did not go down well with other officials and the people of the state, as it led to a public outrage.

News About Nigeria reported that Akeredolu, before proceeding on another medical leave on December 13, 2023, wrote a notice formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The deputy governor immediately assumed the responsibilities of the governor in his full acting capacity.

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was first elected governor of Ondo State in 2016.

Akeredolu’s cabinet member and Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Olateju, had recently described the deceased governor’s ailment as “somatic” during a TV interview.
