Make Tests For Cancer Free - Group Urge FG

A group known as the Rock Foundation for Widows, Orphans, and Less Privileged (ROFWOL) has urged the Federal Government to subsidise the rate for cancer tests and make them free in all government hospitals across the country, News About Nigeria reports.

The convener of ROFWOL, Mrs. Chika-Okafor, a medical engineer, made this call to the government at an event celebrating 22 Years of Touching Lives and Fundraising for the Five Years Project in Lagos.

She stated that the huge cost of carrying out cancer tests scares a lot of people, especially women, from carrying out the tests.

She noted that the government has the power to do a lot to see that cancer, especially cervical cancer, is eradicated.

Chika-Okafor said that the government can make this possible by reducing the cost of the test, as this will encourage more women to take the test and certify that they are safe.

She also appealed to the big companies and organisations in the country to pool the funds together and take care of the cost as part of their corporate social responsibility so that people can simply walk into any hospital and get tested.

Speaking also at the event, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at Healthwize Consult, Lagos, Dr. Olufunmilola Mojoyinola, urged women to take advantage of the provisions made available in public hospitals and go for screening, maintaining that the screening will detect if there are cancerous cells in the body, as it does not usually come with symptoms at its early stage.
