The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said that it is actively investigating an incident caught on camera at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where a female customs officer was seen demanding a N5,000 bribe from a passenger for the release of his luggage.
News About Nigeria gathered that the customs officer insisted that the passenger pay N5,000 before allowing him to proceed with his luggage.
The passenger handed over N1,000, which the customs officer rejected, saying that she would not accept anything less than N4,000.
The passenger offered N1,000 again, but the official rejected it, asking for N3,000 and then questioned how much money the customer had.
The passenger expressed his displeasure, stating that he was carrying food and would not be giving extra money.
The customs officer then moved the guy’s luggage to a corner, indicating that she would delay him if the requested amount was not given.
In response to the incident, the NCS issued a statement on Tuesday through its National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, condemning the unprofessional conduct captured in the video.
The statement confirmed that the officer involved is a member of the Nigeria Customs Service assigned to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Area Command.
The NCS stated that a thorough investigation is being conducted to fully evaluate the incident and that appropriate measures will be implemented in light of the results.
The public was given the assurance by the NCS that information regarding the investigation’s findings would be shared as soon as possible.
