Minister Slams Federal Housing Agency Over Poor Performance, Inefficiency

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has slammed the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) for its poor performance and inability to provide houses for Nigerians across the federation, News About Nigeria reports.

The Minister also lamented that the agency has been able to deliver only 50,000 houses in 50 years which means that it delivered an average of 1,000 houses yearly in five decades.

Dangiwa, who said this at the 50th anniversary of the agency in Abuja, noted that the FHA has not been able to maximize Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) it entered into over the years because it has delivered little or no value to the country.

The Minister, therefore, called on the Federal Housing Authority to wake up to their responsibilities of providing shelter to Nigerians in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

He condemned the agency’s mode of operation, especially with the so many institutional advantages it can leverage to deliver more results.

According to the minister, the institutional advantages are free access to land from the Federal Government in all layouts and new districts; relationships with other government entities like the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and strategic positioning to engage in Public Private Partnerships with reputable developers given its recognition as a government agency.

He added that other countries FHAs like Algeria, delivers between 400,000 and one million houses yearly.

He, therefore, called on the leadership of the FHA to be creative and innovative in order to aggressively upscale its delivery capacity in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
