The Kano state government has discovered 3,234 ineligible workers earning salaries in the state public service, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi who made the revelation on Friday, a 13-year-old girl, some primary and secondary school students, members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, are among the ineligible workers recruited by the immediate past administration.

Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf, when he assumed office, directed the immediate suspension of salaries of about 12,566 public servants who were part of the last minutes recruitment of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s government.

Governor Yusuf-led government also constituted a 22-member committee to investigate the enployees and make recommendations on the next line of action.

The committee, according to the SSG, submitted its report and recommendations after two months of investigation.

Dr. Bichi disclosed that the committee discovered that, due to the hastened employment exercise carried out by Ganduje’s administration, they failed to capture the financial implication of the employment in the 2023 appropriation.

He also explained that majority of those who are ineligible for employment that were uncovered did not go through proper and formal screening exercise while some got the job with falsified certificates.

The SSG also stated that the Kano state government would ensure that culprits face appropriate sanctions and punishment especially civil servants that carried out the action against the civil service rules.

He further stated that the mother of the 13-year-old girl, who is a worker in the public service, would also be sanctioned because the committee discovered that she facilitated her daughter’s employment and has been receiving salaries through her account.

Dr. Bichi also disclosed that, in line with Governor Yusuf’s agenda, the government would be offering 9,332 employment to qualified individuals with relevant skills opportunity into the service.
