An Appeal Court in Lagos has affirmed the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the general election, upholding his position as the duly elected governor of Lagos State.

News About Nigeria gathered that the three-man panel of the Election Petition Appeal, sitting in Lagos on Wednesday, also confirmed Kehinde Obafemi Hamzat as the deputy governor.

The court dismissed an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Olajide Adeniran (Jandor), citing a lack of merit.

The panel stated that the appellants failed to prove their pre-election matters and left the court empty-handed.

“Even though they were all pre-election matters, the appellants (PDP and Adeniran) still failed to prove them. The appellants came empty-handed and left empty-handed. They merely enjoyed their day in court. Their petition is dismissed”, the jurists stated.

In September 2023, Sanwo-Olu’s victory was upheld by the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, reiterating his status as the legitimately elected governor of Lagos State.

News About Nigeria reports that the tribunal rejected the petitions submitted by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party and Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that Rhodes-Vivour claimed in his petition that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the APC’s nominee for governor, lacked the qualifications necessary to run for office.

Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Hamzat, are said to have been ineligible to run for office, according to Adediran and the PDP.

Adediran begged for the election to be ruled a waste of all votes voted for them.

A further claim made by Jandor was that Rhodes-Vivour was ineligible to run at the time of the election.
