Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the main Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to call off their planned nationwide strike for Wednesday.

Following the attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State, labour unions vowed to go on a nationwide strike.

Following the attack, workers’ unions made several demands and threatened to go on strike if their demands were not considered.

In its reaction, Ohanaeze praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for acting quickly to execute some of the criteria asked by the NLC and TUC.

Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed happiness at the IGP’s swift redeployment of the lmo State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Barde, to promote an atmosphere of peace and stability during the state’s governorship election on November 11.

“With the upcoming state gubernatorial elections scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2023, Ohanaeze Ndigbo would like to commend the efforts of the presidency, particularly the Inspector General of Police, for swiftly taking action to implement one of the conditions set by the NLC and TUC, following clashes between Ajaero, the police, and the Imo State Government on Wednesday, November 1, 2023,” he said.

The organisation asks the NLC to consider suspending the intended nationwide strike on November 8, 2023.

News About Nigeria gathered that the request was made in appreciation of the redeployment of the Imo State Commissioner of Police to build a peaceful and stable environment in Imo State.

The association emphasised that both Gov. Hope Uzodimma and Joe Ajaero are notable Igbo sons, and they urged both of them to prioritise Imo State’s well-being above everything else.

The association also encouraged the Imo State Government, organised trade unions, and Biafra agitators to respect the rights and freedom of Imo citizens and residents to vote freely in the upcoming governorship election in the State.
