EFCC Plans To Rehabilitate Convicted Internet Fraudsters, Says Chairman

Chairman of the Financial and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the entire command to stop working at night following a fresh review of the process of arresting and depositing suspicious money.

He issued the directive in Abuja on Wednesday in response to the arrest of 69 internet fraudsters by officers of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the commission in Ile-Ife of Osun State.

According to him, the office wishes to reassure the public that it will not step back from its administrative authority in the performance of its duties.

“In line with the newly-reviewed procedures on arrest and bail of suspects by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” Mr Olukoyede “has directed that sting operations at night time be stopped in all the Commands of the EFCC,” the statement said.

News About Nigeria reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission carried out the action in the early hours of Monday morning.

It was reported that the attack in the morning targeted the two main hotels of the university in Ile-Ife, while the students and their vehicles were taken to the Ibadan office of the board.

Olukoyede gave the directive on Wednesday night as fallout intensified over the agency’s controversial raid on the campus.

Hussein Afolabi, one of the lawyers representing the students, said that they were given permission after the communal violence, but no strict restrictions were imposed.

He said: “58 students have now been released. The other 10 people who are still in prison will be released tomorrow.”
