A man identified as Jelili Lawal has been arraigned before the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for allegedly raping a 78-year-old woman to death, News About Nigeria reports.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Babatunde Ashifat, who narrated how Lawal raped the septuagenarian to death, he received the case for investigation on January 2, 2019.
Ashifat, a witness in the case, stated that the case was reported at their station by officers who were on patrol.
He further told the court that the policemen who reported the case were called by two ladies who saw the defendant allegedly raping the victim.
According to Ashifat, the old woman was with the defendant on January 1, 2019, in the Maryland area of Lagos and begged him to help her locate her way home.
In his words: “The defendant gave her N500, and they boarded the same bus together. Upon reaching a bus stop, the defendant told her to disembark at the Shoprite and took her to an uncompleted building in a bushy area, assaulted, and raped her in the middle of the night.
“The victim was crying for help when two ladies heard her and caught the defendant in the act. They helped the woman by calling a patrol officer, and the matter was reported at our station.”
He also told the court that the alleged victim, who had a hearing problem and was declared missing by her family, sustained injuries from the sexual assault.
He also explained to the court that the 78-year-old woman later died from the incident due to excessive bleeding.
According to him, she was bleeding in her anus and vagina and was taken to Mirabel Medical Centre, where, upon examination, it was confirmed that there was a forceful penetration in the vagina.
After the hearings, Justice Rahman Oshodi adjourned the case until October 27, 2023, for the continuation of the trial.
