The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed Senator Elisha Abbo’s claim that he is behind the decision of the appeal court to sack him from the Senate, News About Nigeria reports.
According to Akpabio, contrary to Abbo’s claim, he has no reason to witch-hunt the sacked lawmaker.
Abbo had alleged that Akpabio was behind his removal from the Senate because he is among the Senators who campaigned for Senator Yari during the struggle to elect a Senate President.
The sacked lawmaker, who spoke with journalists after his removal, also revealed that four other senators, including Orji Uzor Kalu, who worked against the emergence of Akpabio as Senate President, had been pencilled down to be sacked.
“I have it from a reliable source and a very highly placed one for that matter, that myself and four other senators within the fold of the ruling All Progressives Congress would be removed from the Senate through rulings from the courts, all because of working against the emergence of Akpabio as President of the 10th Senate.
“I won’t mention the names of all the other ones targeted, but the next in line is Senator Orji Uzor Kalu,” Abbo claimed.
Abbo also faulted the court’s judgment, insisting that it was strange because there was no way the PDP candidate could have defeated him at the poll when he was so popular that his margin of victory against him was 11,000 votes.
He also noted that the judiciary needs to maintain its assignment as the last hope of the common man.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Monday, nullified the election of Abbo, who is the senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District.
The appellate court, therefore, declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Amos Yohanna, as the winner of the February 25 senatorial election.
Yohanna had filed a petition at the tribunal sitting in Yola, challenging the declaration of Abbo, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the poll, arguing that Abbo did not score the majority of lawful votes cast.
The court, in its judgment, upheld Yohanna’s contention and nullified Abbo’s election.
