Appeal Court Sacks Senator Elisha Abbo

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, on Monday, sacked Senator Elisha Abbo, who represents Adamawa North district, News About Nigeria reports.

The nullification of Abbo’s election follows the appeal by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Amos Yohanna, challenging the election results on the grounds of irregularities.

Yohanna’s initial appeal was dismissed by the election tribunal, leading to his further appeal to the Court of Appeal.

In its judgment, the court declared Yohanna as the rightful winner of the senatorial election, invalidating Abbo’s election.

In a unanimous decision, the court vacated the earlier judgment by the National Assembly tribunal, which affirmed Abbo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the valid winner of the Senatorial seat.

The three-member panel, presided over by Justice C.E. Nwosu-Iheme, therefore ordered INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to Amos Yohanna as the duly elected lawmaker representing the area in the National Assembly.

Reacting to the court’s decision that voided his election in favour of the PDP candidate on his verified Facebook page, Abbo urged his constituents to remain calm, assuring them that he will address the recent development as soon as possible.

“The Court of Appeal in Abuja has just voided my election. The gang-up has temporarily worked. I will soon address the press,” he stated.

Senator Abbo had won his re-election in the February 25, 2023, National Assembly election, while Yohanna came second, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
