A total of 286 Nigerian Army officers are currently undergoing the 2023 Captain to Major practical examination, which is designed to assess their proficiency for higher responsibilities within the military ranks, News About Nigeria gathered.

The examination aims to evaluate their competence and preparedness for enhanced roles in addressing the current security challenges facing the nation.

Speaking in Abeokuta on Sunday, Major-General Kevin Aligbe, the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army, emphasised the significance of the examination in ensuring that officers are well-prepared to tackle the evolving security challenges.

During the examination, candidates will be assessed across a range of areas, including mental and physical fitness, communication skills, logical reasoning, and map reading, among others.

Major-General Aligbe urged the officers to approach the examination with utmost sincerity and integrity, stressing that any form of cheating or examination malpractice would not be tolerated.

He underscored that the assessment was crucial, given the current global security challenges, especially those related to terrorism and insurgency.

The examination is tailored to address these specific security challenges while focusing on aspects like effective communication and map reading, in addition to logical reasoning.

To be eligible for promotion from the rank of Captain to Major, officers must score at least 50 per cent in each subject and achieve an overall aggregate score of 60 per cent.

Major-General Aligbe noted that this practical promotion examination plays a crucial role in manpower development, particularly in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts.

“This practical promotion examination from Captain to Major for these 286 officers across the country and beyond is to evaluate their proficiency for higher responsibilities, manpower development, especially in counter-terrorism and insurgency,” he said.

In his remarks, Major-General Muhammed Usman, the General Officer Commanding, 81st Division of the Nigerian Army, emphasised the importance of the examination in enhancing junior leadership capabilities and building capacity to achieve national security objectives.

He highlighted that the examination is structured to broaden the candidates’ knowledge and understanding of various aspects of military operations, with a specific emphasis on Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations.
