The newly appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Yemi Cardoso, has assured Nigerians that he will not allow politicians to hijack the central bank for their selfish motives during his tenure.

Cardoso made this comment during his screening by the Senate on Tuesday, as part of the confirmation process for his new role, News About Nigeria gathered.

Responding to a question raised by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the controversial tenure of his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele, and the potential for political interference in the CBN, Cardoso emphasized his commitment to protect the integrity and independence of the central bank.

“It is important that we, who are considered for this position today, understand that this is a position of trust. With that comes a huge responsibility to meet up with that trust.”

Cardoso continued, “As far as I am concerned, under my leadership, we will not be hijacked by anybody. The idea is to ensure that we do what is right, when it is right, and how it is right. We’ve seen what the effect of not doing right has been, and we do not intend for that to be repeated.”

Meanwhile after a grilling screening process, the Senate confirmed Yemi Cardoso as the 11th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

In addition, the Senate also confirmed the nominations of Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello as Deputy Governors of the CBN.

Cardoso’s appointment follows the suspension and subsequent resignation of his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele, in June, marking a transition in the leadership of the CBN.
