Steve Chuks, a popular skit maker known for his character ‘Madam Gold’, has spoken out about the stereotypes and assumptions he faces due to cross-dressing in his comedy skits.
According to him, people often label him as gay solely based on his choice of portraying female characters in his content.
News About Nigeria gathered that Chuks addressed the issue during an episode of the ‘Toke Moments’ podcast, hosted by actress Toke Makinwa.
He expressed his frustration with the tendency to stereotype men who wear female attire, emphasising that his choice of roles in his skits does not imply his sexual orientation.
He revealed that he had been approached by gay men who made advances towards him, assuming he was gay based on his on-screen persona.
He mentioned that he has consistently rejected such advances, clarifying that his performances are just that—performances.
“One thing I don’t like is how people stereotype men who wear female clothes. What I’m doing now, it immediately feels like I’m a certain thing. Have I told you anything? Did I tell you that I was anything?
“I have also met people [gays] that were like, ‘You sure say this your bumbum I no go use am do anything?’ Yeah, guys. And I was like, ‘what’s happening here? Is it the ‘Madam Gold’ character deceiving you? But I’m not dressed as Madam Gold now. Leave me.’
“I’m not joking. I’ve been approached so many times by gay men. I don’t want that kind of thing. I didn’t tell you anything. Don’t come to me and say anything like that,” he said.
Chuks also highlighted the double standards when it comes to fashion and clothing choices, particularly in Nigeria.
He questioned why men who wear women’s clothing face derogatory assumptions while women wearing men’s clothing do not face similar judgments.
