Protesters and fans of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, gathered for a candlelight procession in his honour on Thursday night.
However, reports emerged that they were allegedly dispersed with teargas at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State.
News About Nigeria gathered that the protest, organised to pay tribute to the late artiste, was announced via the official X handle of the deceased earlier in the week.
Fans and supporters were encouraged to join the candlelight procession and tribute concert to honour the memory of Mohbad.
Participants in the procession were dressed in white T-shirts and danced to the songs of the late artiste as a way to express their last respects and tributes.
While there were claims that teargas was fired by police officers in the state, a video shared on X through actress Iyabo Ojo’s Instagram live video showed one of the participants stating that teargas had been fired but from an unknown source.
“I came out for my brother, Mohbad. This is the cabman that helped me. They fired teargas. These people came from the back. We don’t know them. I don’t even know them. All the police officers were there securing us,” the participant said.
According to the witness, they were sitting in front of the tollgate, surrounded by a significant number of police officers, and the origin of the teargas was unclear.
Despite the reported dispersal, the candlelight procession and tribute concert were organised as a heartfelt gesture by fans and supporters to commemorate the life and legacy of Mohbad, whose sudden and controversial death has sparked nationwide attention and demands for justice.
