The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped from 39 to 40th position in the recent FIFA Coca-Cola World Ranking.
The world football governing body disclosed this on its official website on Thursday morning. Despite Nigeria’s impressive 6-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe recently, the Super Eagles dropped by a spot.
Meanwhile, in the African context, the Nigerian team currently occupies the sixth position. The top six national teams are Morocco (1st), Senegal (2nd), Tunisia (3rd), Algeria (4th), and Egypt (5th).
News About Nigeria reports that in the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifiers, Nigeria’s opponents also experienced minor changes in their rankings.
Lesotho, who are set to face Nigeria in their first qualifier match in November, dropped to the 152nd position. South Africa and Benin Republic, other teams in the group, slipped to the 65th and 94th positions, respectively.
Zimbabwe maintained their 125th position, while Rwanda stayed at 139th. Saudi Arabia, which is scheduled to play Nigeria in a friendly match in October, dropped to the 57th spot.
At the global level, Argentina extended their lead in the FIFA rankings after securing a 1-0 victory over Ecuador and a 3-0 away win against Bolivia in the opening qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. France, in second place, lost ground to Argentina following a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany.
The top five rankings remain unchanged from the July 2023 edition of the global ranking, with Brazil in third place, followed by England and Belgium occupying the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Croatia occupies the sixth position, the Netherlands stands at seventh, and Portugal is eighth, being the only team among the top ten to climb one position.
Meanwhile, Italy slipped to ninth place after a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier, while Spain completes the top-ten lineup.
