Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) 48 hours to reverse its recent fee hike.
Giving the ultimatum in a statement made available on its official Twitter page, the organisation asked the management of the institution to immediately reverse to its old fees terming the increase as unlawful.
“BREAKING: The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in tuition fees for students, reportedly from N19,000 to over N190,000. We’ll see in court if the fees are not reversed within 48 hours,” the statement read.
The group request follows the protest held by students of the university against the recent increase. The students are kicking against the recent increase stating that it had become unaffordable to afford.
News About Nigeria recalls that students of the University of Lagos continued their protest against the recent fee hike by the institution on Wednesday after an initial demonstration that was held last week.
The management of UNILAG, had in July, outrageously hiked the tuition fee of the institution by over 300 per cent, a development which sparked public uproar at a time when Nigerians were grappling with the hard-felt impact of the removal of fuel subsidy.
Defending the move, the institution management claimed that the fee was hiked in line with the current economic realities of the nation. There are however reports that the management of Obafemi Awolowo University has taken a cue from UNILAG and hiked its tuition fee.
