Following the ongoing debate over who was the better midfielder between Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard, Scholes, former Manchester United player and legend has offered his opinion, News About Nigeria reports.

In an interview on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel, Scholes shared his perspective on the debate that has been in the public domain for long.

He acknowledged the difficulty in making a conclusive judgment, pointing at the distinct roles he and Gerrard played for their respective clubs.

Scholes who played a vital role leading to several triumphs of Manchester United, under Sir Alex Ferguson, recognized that Gerrard often acted as the “match winner” for Liverpool.

Scholes was diplomatic in his assessment, stating, “I can’t answer that. Gerrard. Gerrard’s a great player… I’m not saying myself. We’re different, we’re very different.

“He’s an athlete. I think he was more of a match winner, but he was playing in a team where he probably had to be. I was more part of a team. He was more individual I think.”

When pressed on whether he could have replicated Gerrard’s feats at Liverpool and vice versa, Scholes acknowledged their differences once again.

He admitted, “Very different again. I wouldn’t be able to do what he did at Liverpool. Whether he could’ve done what I did at United, I don’t know. I don’t see why not. But I couldn’t have done what he did at Liverpool, no.”

Another prominent figure in the ongoing discussion is Chelsea’s legend Frank Lampard. The former England forward shared his thoughts on the matter in an interview with Gary Neville on the Overlap.

Lampard during the interview, expressed the difficulty in comparing the three midfield maestros. He praised both Scholes and Gerrard for their unique attributes and contributions to their respective teams.

He stated, “It’s a horrible question. I get it in cabs in London, ‘what do you think of the Lampard/Gerrard/Scholes debate’ and all that stuff, even to this day.

“We all had our own attributes and our own things, it’s just too hard. I like them both as lads and they were amazing players. I will never forget the impact of training with Scholesy,” he added.
