Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani has blamed the spread of coup de tat across African countries on poorly conducted elections.

Airing his opinion in a tweet, Mr Sani who was reacting to the recent coup that saw the ousting of Gabon President Ali Bongo, suggested that the Bongo family dominated and destroyed the democracy of Gabon.

Mr Sani asserted that Democracies die when elections are poisoned.

“A BBC correspondent just reported people in Gabon are “genuinely” trooping out to the streets in support of the Coup in Libreville. The Bongo family dominated and destroyed Democracy. Democracy dies in Africa when elections are poisoned,” Mr Sani wrote.

News About Nigeria gathered that African leaders have continued to express their worries over the widespread coup that has continued to take place in countries across the region.

Barely a month ago, the military in Niger ousted the country’s democratically elected government. The development comes in the wake of other coups that have continued to happen over the years.

According to reports, about 7 coups have been recorded in Africa since 2019.

However, in a bid to return Niger to democratic rule, the President Bola Tinub-led government has continued to engage the Niger junta in diplomatic negotiations.

Recall that President Tinubu had earlier expressed worries at the rate at which the wave of coup was spreading across the continent.

President Tinubu however disclosed that he was ready to work with other African leaders to put an end to the wave of contagious autocracy currently spreading across the continent.
